WORKSHOP: Fascia in Motion: The Fascial System, a Whole-body organ of Communication
An overview of the current research and publications on the architecture of the neuromyofascial system prepares movement educators to apply these discoveries to the practice and teaching of movement sequences. Research on fascia suggests new criteria for exercise sequencing and informs choices for movement tempo and rhythm. Verbal cueing to facilitate proprioception and interoception supports the neuromyofascial system as a body-wide organ of communication. The direction and quality of touch cues can be refined in order to be harmonious with the properties of the neuromyofascial system. This workshop references my book Fascia in Motion: Fascia-focused movement for Pilates (Handspring Publishing, 2017)
WORKSHOP: Standing Variations on the Reformer for Hip Mobility, Balance and Strength
Novel reformer exercises clarify movement relationships of the pelvis, thorax and limbs. Safely sequenced for success, these exercises improve mobility, stability and connection of the limbs and trunk. The enhanced balance and motor control resulting from these sequences support efficient, confident walking.
WORKSHOP: Elizabeth’s OOV Repertoire
The Oov is a versatile movement tool that enhances Pilates mat and apparatus exercises. Invented by Daniel Vladeta, an osteopath from Australia, the Oov combines a unique, organic shape with a proprietary resilient material. The result is a fascia-friendly movement environment that supports the architecture of the spine, stimulates proprioception, encourages mobility and challenges stability.
Daniel Vladeta, Oov inventor, developed a curriculum for the Oov that is used by professional athletes in Australia. Variations on his curriculum are used by Pilates teachers and physiotherapists world wide. Daniel asked Elizabeth Larkam to develop sequences on the Oov to complement his curriculum.
This workshop includes a rejuvenating Oov class, a Pilates mat class with the Oov, and a Pilates studio session that uses the Oov with the Trapeze Table, the Chair, the Reformer and the Reformer with Tower.
Movement sequences will be demonstrated on course participants with detailed explanations of the intent of each exercise, the indications, contra indications, and recommended cues. Course participants will engage in supervised small group practice in order to observe individual differences in structure, motor learning and motor control. Group discussion will explore and summarize the movement practice experiences.
WORKSHOP: Connect the Spine, Pelvis, Hip, Knee, Ankle and Foot with Fascia-focused Pilates
Pilates supports whole body movement with sequences that develop continuity throughout our structure. The design and function of the neuromyofascial system relies on tissue continuity rather than the separation of muscles and joints. Learn unique movement sequences that connect the spine to the foot and all the structures in between. Learn how movements of each link in the chain affect every other structure, those close by and those some distance away. Appreciate the non-linear complexity of Pilates movement.
WORKSHOP: Organising the Thorax for Optimal Shoulder Girdle Function
A well organised thorax provides the foundation for a functional shoulder girdle. Movement sequences that integrate Pilates mat and apparatus exercises with a variety of somatic practices develop thoracic mobility in the coronal and transverse planes in order to support sagittal organisation, thoracic extension and multi-planar fluid movements of the shoulder girdle. These sequences are effective for clients of any age with “laptop neck and computer shoulders”. They are also appropriate for the older client.
WORKSHOP: Clear Cueing – Essential Touch cues for the Pilates Environment
Advance your effectiveness as a Pilates professional by learning and practicing skillful touch cues that enhance the value of exercises on the Reformer, Chair, Trapeze Table and Barrels. Working within your scope of practice as a movement educator in the Pilates environment, learn to convey valuable information using precise touch that complements articulate verbal instruction and organizational intent.
During the workshop:
Pilates mat teachers must be multi-tasking experts, charged with providing safe, effective, functional movement experiences to clients of varying levels of ability. While verbal cues are essential, touch cues may be even more effective in conveying the specifics of complex movement relationships. Learn and practice informative, appropriate, efficient touch cues for a variety of exercises in supine, side lying, prone, seated, high kneeling and standing.
Workshop (3 hours) – $270 each | Bulk discounts: 2 for $520, 3 for $750, 4 for$960, 5 for $1100, all 6 for $1200
